Mike Walsh, Managing Director and Chief Development & Planning Officer
Mike joins Team Genesis following a highly acclaimed and accomplished career in college athletics and university advancement. For 17 years, Mike was Executive Director and Chair of the Department of Physical Education and Athletics at Washington and Lee University. Under Mike’s skilled guidance W&L athletics flourished, winning 10 of 12 ODAC Commissioners Cups (symbolic of all-around program excellence), claiming over 100 individual conference titles, and earning national recognition with some 50 teams advancing to NCAA Tournament play.
While markedly expanding the University’s broad-based varsity sports offerings, Mike also oversaw the construction and renovation of nine different facilities – enabling W&L to provide one of the truly finest student-athlete experiences on any level. And his emphasis on the well-rounded student athlete is best evidenced in the 29 W&L students named to various CoSIDA Academic All-America teams during his tenure, and the 10 who received prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships.
Also particularly noteworthy, for the past nine years Mike has served as Special Assistant to the Vice President of University Advancement. In this position, the breadth and depth of his multifaceted talent was again showcased as he played a central role in the recently completed capital campaign, which exceeded its $500MM goal by raising $542 MM in support of the University’s highest institutional priorities. Mike’s contributions to W&L will long endure, and were recognized in October 2010, with the creation of an endowed chair for Athletic Directors in his name. He was further honored, in 2013, with his induction into the W&L University Athletic Hall of Fame.
Mike’s extensive committee work includes the Washington and Lee University Presidents Council, the Faculty Task Force for Inclusion, and Chairman of the Long Range Plan Committee for Athletics at W&L. On the national level, Mike has served as a member of the College Sports Project for the Mellon Foundation, the NCAA Baseball Committee, the NCAA Division III Restructuring Committee, and as Chairman of the NCAA Division III Membership Committee. He is also an Ethics Fellow at the Institute for International Sport.
The earlier years of Mike’s career were highlighted by administering and coaching positions at select educational institutions, including a period as Admissions Officer at Northfield Mt. Hermon School – and eight seasons as Head Baseball Coach and Assistant Athletic Director at Dartmouth College. Providing strong indication of things to come, Mike led Dartmouth to the NCAA tournament and developed multiple future MLB players.
